Verizon was originally founded in 1983 and was known as Bell Atlantic, based on the East coast.  In the year 2000, Verizon was the new name and it has grown to be one of the largest mobile phone carriers in the USA.  Verizon even bought MCI in 2005, and continues to explode as a huge carrier.  It even garnered rights to the iPhone, which hopefully will be offered sometime in 2011!  Verizon doesn't use the same networks as Tmobile and AT&T, so many people have made the switch over to Verizon, as it is often more reliable.
